Cumberland Island National Seashore & Back to Florida
After Savannah, we turned and headed back toward Florida for our niece’s confirmation weekend. We had an extra week to fill, and Crooked River State Park, near St Mary’s, Georgia, looked great and had availability. We had a water/electric site, but if we had booked early, there were also full hookup and riverfront sites.

St. Mary’s is the gateway to Cumberland Island National Seashore. We explored the historic waterfront downtown, visited the museum and visitor center, and were able to book last-minute ferry tickets to the island.

Once on the island, we started the ~5-mile Dungeness Loop trail, which took us to the Carnegies’ former vacation home, Dungeness ruins.

The next part of the trail was a raised boardwalk through a salt marsh, where we saw a couple of wild horses from a distance.

The boardwalks continued through palm groves, over dunes, and onto the beach.

Next, the trail went through a live oak canopy and then along a river until we arrived back at the ferry dock.

This trail was fantastic, and this National Park is such a hidden gem!
Next, we moved on to Jacksonville and stayed at Crosslake RV Park because of the great Passport America rate. Cody loved all the action at our waterfront site.

We had a lot of great family time this week! Christina, James, and Eva came over for pizza and brownies on my birthday. The following weekend, the rest of our family arrived, and we spent an afternoon in St. Augustine with Theresa and Ed. Then the main event, Eva’s confirmation mass, followed by lunch at Cooper’s Hawk, and hanging out at the pool.

We’re currently spending a few weeks in WNC before heading out for summer in the northeast!

What a great family week! I know your parents loved it and I’m sure it was special for Christina to have you all there. I went to St Mary’s with Ben and friends a few years back. We stayed in a lovely very old home. Also walked the beautiful Cumberland island. Happy travels. Cathy

Very cool that you’ve also been to Cumberland Island. That was one of our favorite hikes!
